5 ways to spice up your work wardrobe

You spend a lot of time at work, so you need to feel fabulous in what you are wearing. Bringing a bit of fun into your work wardrobe is an easy way to add some joy to your life in general.

Whether you work for a conservative law firm or a funky advertising agency, these tips can easily be implemented.

1. Add a pop of colour.

We often think of professional being a monotone look of black, white and grey. However, clever use of colour can actually add to your professional look.

Add some fun to your neutral basics by wearing a blouse in a bold colour that suits your complexion or a print that you enjoy.

Colour does have a psychological affect on the wearer as well as those around you. If you are feeling low in energy, wear a bright colour to perk you up.

But do consider the impression you want to create and roll you will play on the day.

For example, wearing red will work well when presenting a proposal, but won’t be helpful when going into a high conflict meeting.

2. Replace trousers with a skirt.

Why wear trousers all the time? A skirt can create a feminine look without being girly. Either wear a printed skirt with a neutral top or jacket or a neutral skirt with printed or colourful blouse. A-line or fish tail shape skirts work well to balance curves.

If you love the fashionable pencil skirt, but have hips, select a straight pencil skirt rather than one that narrows at the hem for balance. Short skirt lengths work best just above, on or just below the knee to maintain a professional image.

3. Dress it up.

I love dresses as they are so easy to wear and seldom crease. The right dress should suit your body shape and be comfortable to wear. There is nothing worse than having to tug at the hem to cover your legs when seated.

Prints are often far more forgiving than plains, depending on the fabric, as they disguise the ‘less loved bits’ and seldom reveal panty lines.

4. Add fun with accessories.

Even if you do feel the need to keep your look fairly neutral, then add a bit of excitement in your choice of accessories. A neutral dress with a pair of red shoes can make a personality statement without being over the top.

Why always stick to a classic black handbag? Maybe it’s time to splash out of an electric blue or bright yellow number. With a fairly neutral wardrobe, a yellow handbag will go with everything.

5. Add a bit of detail.

Classic basics don’t need to be boring. A classic black jacket can have beautiful buttons or some stylistic detail that makes it feel more like you. Look for ways of expressing your personal style, even in the classic pieces you buy.

Adding a bit of fun to your work wardrobe starts by thinking about things differently. Look for ways of bringing fun into your wardrobe and you will find them.
