Book review: The Stranger by Harlan Coben

The Stranger by Harlan Coben (first published in 2015 by Orion publishers)

What I liked most about Harlan Coben’s thriller ‘The Stranger’ is the original plot and quite different storyline from other murder mysteries I have read. It’s not my favourite mystery/thriller, but it was my first book of Coben’s and I will definitely read him again.

The Stranger lacks the grittiness and in-depth characters I usually prefer from this genre – but there is no doubt that you won’t want to put this book down as you endevour to find out, along with Adam Price, who is a very ordinary guy as opposed to the usual damaged cop protagonist, what the outcome will be from a very intriguing start.

From the very beginning you are hooked when an ordinary businessman and family man is approached by a total stranger in a bar. What this stranger reveals to Adam Price plants large seeds of doubt about his, up-until-now, very normal family existence.

How does this man know his wife, and where is he getting information about Adam’s sons? These are the two most important questions that Adam must get answers to, but 24 hours after confronting his wife, Corrine disappears with only a mysterious text message to her husband ‘to give her some time and not go to the police under any circumstances.’

It is at this point you are introduced to more players in the novel that are also having their lives disrupted by the stranger, who seems to be operating under the misapprehension that he is changing lives for the better by revealing devastating secrets to unsuspecting family members about their children and or partners.

He appears to be something of an internet hacker which makes the plot more credible, which helps as the motive behind his actions is not always clear-cut.

Adam must now uncover who, or what, is behind the revelations all the while he is trying to desperately find his wife and make sure his sons are not affected by their mother’s disappearance. During the course of Adam’s ‘investigation’ he meets other people whose lives have been affected by the stranger but the difficult part is knowing who to trust, and who not to trust.

This is a fast-paced read that is surprisingly action-packed with a nice twist at the end.

Enjoy!
