It could be highlights, lowlights or completely changing the hue of your hair, but at some point most women will play around with their hair colour.
Should you get a professional to do it? Or will a home kit do? ghd National Educator, Craig Hopkins shares his tips for making sure your hair will still be healthy despite colouring.
1. Buying a colour from a pharmacy or supermarket may be cheaper than having it done in the salon, but the condition it leaves your hair in often leaves a lot to be desired. A professional colour on the other hand contains ingredients which assist in maintaining the hair's condition.
2. If you are on a tight budget and have to go down the route of using home colour, always try and stick to the same brand and colour. When re-applying colour at home, ensure that it is only applied to the regrowth area. Faded ends can be refreshed by spraying the mid lengths to ends with a bit of water and then combing the colour through the length of the hair for the last 5 minutes of the processing time. If you continually apply the colour all the way through, for the full processing time, you end up with colour build-up towards the ends of the hair and it may even turn black.
3. If you have dyed your hair dark and are wanting to go lighter, don’t attempt this yourself unless yellow or orange is your desired colour! This is a process that has to be monitored and should only be done by professionals. It’s also important to understand that sometimes this cannot be done in one sitting.
