Celebs like Penelope Cruz and Charlize Theron swear by it, but what is hyaluronic acid (HA) really?

It has become a hot skincare ingredient, as it hydrates the skin and supports many important areas of the anatomy, mainly your skin.

So how does it work?

According to Victoria Health, we roughly contain 15 grams of HA in our bodies, as it’s in our eyes, lips and joints. Hyalogic reports that roughly 50% of the acid is found in the skin and this is how our skin gets moisture and hydrates the collagen.

This is why a baby's skin is soft and dewy at birth, because babies are born with a high amount of HA, which keeps their skin smooth and plump. As we grow older, our skin becomes drier and loses its elasticity, mainly due to the fact that after 40 the HA level decreases in our body by one-third.

HA is completely natural and can be derived from various resources, whether it’s from serums, creams, injections, supplements or foods which are rich in magnesium, such as cauliflower and lettuce.

Then there is a phenomenon called hyaluronic acid fillers, according to Health24, it is not only used to reduce facial lines, but it also makes your lips fuller.

These fillers do not treat the skin, but is used to fill tissue and give a lifting effect to the tissues in your chin, cheeks and lips. The injection is not permanent as it lasts for six to eight months.

Why you should give it a go:

•    It is known to prevent aging

HA has been given a lot of interest due to the fact that it is known to prevent aging, and is often promoted as the ‘fountain of youth’. It helps clear out wrinkles and laughing lines by adding moisture and promotes younger-looking skin.

•    Can help with various ailments

It is used to prevent joint disorders, such as osteoarthritis and the medicine is injected into the affected joint. It even becomes a skin barrier to address a number of skin concerns, such as acne and sun burn.

•    Works on all skin-types

According to The Doctor Oz Blog, one of the benefits is that it works on all skin-types, even those with oily skin can benefit from HA. The trick for those with oily skin is to look for hyaluronic acid serums and apply it alone or under your moisturiser if you have dry skin. It’s also gentle enough for those who have sensitive skin.

•    Keeps your skin hydrated year round

Where some beauty products dry out in winter, HA adjusts its absorption rate based on the humidity and it works in all climates and seasons. Organic Beauty Skin referred to it as being a smart nutrient and for being unique as it is able to hold in 1l of water per gram of HA, so its ability to hold moisture is impressive.
