5 reasons to exercise in 2014

In fact, at some or other point in our lives most of us have tried exercise, only to discover that our preconceptions were correct – it’s hard sweaty work and to be honest the time would be better spent on the couch where we’re at our happiest.

The funny thing is, exercise is actually one of the things that can make us truly happy and really help us be the best people we can be without that much effort at all.

Once you get over the initial period of having to force yourself to get moving exercise starts getting easier and easier and the benefits just start piling up.

Take a look for yourself at just a few of the benefits exercising can have:

1. You get healthier

Obviously one the main benefits of exercising is that your health improves, including reduced risk of heart disease, increased weight loss and increased fitness.

Unfortunately if you don’t get any exercise right now you’re probably quite unfit, which is what keeps most people from getting into exercise and sticking with it. My advice is to start off slow. Do what you can and then rest. Persistence is key when it comes to exercise.

2. It becomes easier to learn and your memory improves

Now we can get to the less obvious and more interesting benefits of exercise, like improved memory and the ability to learn things more easily.

Exercising increases the flow of oxygen to your brain and activates parts of the brain critical to learning and memory, helping you to think more clearly and improve your recall.

3. You have better sleep

Our brains need well-rested minds to perform at their peaks, yet many of us have difficulty falling asleep and suffer restless nights when we do. Getting into the habit of exercising regularly can help you fall asleep at night and ensure that you sleep the whole night through – leading to a more focused and productive you.

4. It helps you de-stress

All of us experience a degree of stress at work at some point or other and for many of us the same can be said at home. Stress builds up and we become moody, angry, and generally not nice people to be around. Exercise is a healthy way to deal with and dissipate your stress before it manifests in undesirable ways.

5. Your confidence improves

Obviously as we start to lose weight and become fitter our confidence improves, but simply exercising can boost your confidence as well, even before any results start to show.

Putting in the effort to exercise makes you feel as though you’ve accomplished something and makes you feel happier about yourself, your health and your general well-being.
