R1.9 million donated towards plight of women abuse

The Vital Foundation, an initiative launched by Vital Health Foods on 5 August 2013, is set to donate 1.9 million rand to organisations combating abuse against women and children.

The Managing Director formally opened applications for funding on Wednesday, 12 February 2014.

The Vital Foundation raised the funds through their R1 makes a difference campaign, this saw Vital Health Foods donate R1 from the pack of every supplement sold to the foundation – which has been created to support organisations in the fight against woman and child abuse.

Organisations, NGOs (Non-governmental organisation), NPOs (Non-profit organisation) and   similar not-for-profit groups working to end abuse against women and children are invited to apply for funding, the Vital Foundation will consider funding.

George Grieve, Managing Director of Vital Health Foods, described on SABC 3’s Expresso Morning Show the journey that led to the success of the Vital Foundation making its first donation:

“About a year ago, I was absolutely taken aback every time I listened to the news; which was riddled with stories of violence and abuse against the women and children in this country.

As a team, we were sick of sitting back and letting this carry on, and realised it was time to take action. This was when the idea for the Vital Foundation was born. It has only been in existence for seven months, but we have raised enough money to make a substantial dent in this problem that is plaguing our beautiful country.”

Grieve also stated how this donation would not be happening if it weren’t for the consumers who have been active in taking care of their health and in turn have made it possible for the Vital Foundation to reach their first million.

The donations made will make a real difference in the lives of many victims who have suffered different forms of abuse.

The Vital Foundation’s activities rest on the bedrock of the imperative of achieving behaviour change at many levels to address this issue in an integrated, holistic way.

“The absolute imperative is we have to change the underlying social attitudes, which are partly rooted in our incredibly disturbed past and the way that South African men over the centuries have been socialised

into forms of masculinity that are predicated on the idea of being strong and tough and the use of force to assert dominance and control over women, as well as other men,” said Professor Rachel Jewkes, Director of the Gender & Health Research Unit of the South African Medical Research Council, and Specialist Advisor to the Vital Foundation.

It is these kinds of issues that the Vital Foundation wants to address by making funding available to organisation doing good work in this field.
