How to choose the perfect winter coat

A good quality coat is an investment buy. It’s worth every penny if chosen carefully. Your personal style and existing wardrobe will determine what the best colour and style is for you.

When shopping for your perfect winter coat consider the following:

Getting the fit right

Styles that nip in the waist and flair at the hem usually work best. They emphasise your waist, balance curves and makes you look taller and slimmer.

Single breasted is always better than double breasted unless you mostly wear your coat closed.  Double-breasted worn open just leaves a lot of extra flapping fabric. Who needs extra bulk?

Lengths are best when they are either just above the knee or longer. This way it can easily be worn over trousers, skirts and dresses of any length.

If you decide to opt for a shorter coat, make sure it doesn’t cut across your widest point, as it will make you look wider. Rather select a length just below your widest point or just above the knee.

The in-between lengths can make your butt look bigger than it is.

Selecting the perfect colour or fabric

If you mostly wear neutrals then select a coat in a bold colour or print to make your winter look pop. You can really go wild with this one and select a coat that expresses your personality.

Consider a coat in bright red or embroidered fabric or brocade that will mix well with your otherwise neutral wardrobe.

If you wear lots of colour and print then tone it down. Select a neutral colour (black, chocolate, charcoal, camel, ivory) that will go with most of your wardrobe. If plain is just too boring for you, then consider a tweed or neutral brocade.

Just remember, neutral doesn’t have to be boring. Texture and simple detail can make an otherwise boring coat, a complimentary addition to your existing wardrobe without being OTT.

If you love an eclectic look and don’t mind mixing textures, colours and prints, then select a statement piece that you will love to wear most days.

This could be a coat in a mixture of colours or a print that goes with everything. Have fun with it and embrace your personal style.
