5 ways to curb your spending

Here are some tips to help you get financially fit:

  • Shock yourself into reality. Ask a financial advisor to work out how much money you need to save in order to retire with the same lifestyle that you currently enjoy. This alone will cause a few beads of sweat and motivate you to save.

  • Add up all the money you currently spend on "I want" items. If you regularly waste R30 a day at work, it adds up to R600 per month. It really is worth taking a packed lunch instead.

  • Cut down on cell phone and land line costs, try to make personal calls during "off-peak", every bit that you save can go towards an investment.

  • Create a monthly, or even weekly, budget and try your best to stick to it. Keep track of your spending by keeping all your slips and adding them up to see if you are in line with the budget you set yourself.

  • Once you've cut out all the unnecessary spending in your life, calculate the saving that you have made and make sure you invest it.

If you are a spender by nature, it won't be easy to save. But start with small changes, keep track of your progress and don’t give up. You'll be amazed at how much you can accumulate over time with just a little bit of saving. Do you think  it will work for you?
