In response to Lili Radloff’s newsletter about money woes and the fact that it’s the one thing we all have in common, our readers shared their stories.
Here’s what Anonymous has to say:
Yes, this is a very scary topic. Not only to talk about, but when you sit down and do your budget, you actually realise how much debt you have and scare yourself ( sometimes to the point of not reaching for that glass of wine, cos you cant afford it)
I started drawing up a budget for myself a couple of months ago, and have done so (or at least tried to) every month since then. As a single mom who does not get any financial support from my daughter's father, this is a very scary task!!
I list all my expenses on the one side, my income on the other. When you write down your debt by name, and the amount that you owe, it really does give you the motivation to stop yourself from that impulsive shopping spree.
Also, I try to put money aside for emergencies (a school project that needs resources, an uncovered doctor's bill etc), as well as save up for a special occassion (my daughter's birthday)... Trust me, this is certainly not easy when the petrol price just seems to sky rocket!!
But nevertheless, since drawing up this budget, I am in more control of my money, and therefore, know exactly how much I can spend every week. It makes things a little easier, and I find myself in less of a panic when it comes to that dreaded week before payday...
Hope this helps.
Lotsa love (and not so much alcohol... :-( )
