One of the quickest ways to stay looking relevant and modern as we age, is to keep in style. Contemporary style right now dictates that you put away your bootleg jeans and embrace the skinny jean.
But many of you are resisting because you think you can’t wear them. Well I am here to tell you that “too old” and “too big” are no longer excuses to stay trapped in outdated styles. You can – and should – be wearing skinny jeans this winter.
Here’s how you can do it. Start with making sure your shade of denim gets darker the older and bigger you get.
So if you are, like me, over forty and on the wrong side of a size 12, then you should choose a darker denim shade and ignore the pale colours and washed-out denim.
Leave those to the kids. I stick in the deep indigo and black range for my skinny jeans – and go lighter for my looser fit boyfriend jeans. Yes, I wear those too.
Then I would suggest pairing your skinnies with a nice flat shoe, as you get older. Look at how cute Reese Witherspoon looks.
A round toe will balance out a more curvaceous body shape and a pointed toe flat is flattering for a leaner body type. Choose the one that suits you best.
Never wear anything tucked into a skinny jean. It’s all about the relaxed layers. A nice tartan flannel shirt is perfect for this season, but if you want to dress your skinnies up a bit, a silk blouse – un-tucked – and a neatly fitted jacket are perfect for a smart-casual look.
Stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Beckinsale, Angelina Jolie and Coco Rocha all demonstrate this look with ease.
For me, the perfect skinny jeans look is the one that I wear at night. Black skinnies are paired with a low-heel leopard print shoe.
A black silk blouse gives that night-time glamour feel and hangs prettily and most flatteringly over the jeans – I like the length of my blouse to skim my lower hips.
A black jacket thrown over my shoulders completes the look. It’s age appropriate, flattering to my figure, and elegant for pretty much any occasion.
Just follow these three easy rules and you too can look fabulous in skinny jeans. At least give it a try. You will be surprised at how good you look.
