Katy Perry has been causing quite the stir with her latest single, Dark Horse.
First, there was her Grammy Award performance which was partially inspired by the singer Stevie Nicks, and the line "which witch is which", according to US Magazine. She delivered a truly witchy performance that included everything from a giant crystal ball and broomsticks to being burned at the stake.
This performance, undeniably inspired by many historical and cultural references to Paganism and witchcraft, was quickly labelled Satanic, and accused of being part of an Illuminati Agenda.
The Christian Post even linked the performance to Christian singer Natalie Grant's decision to leave the Grammy's early, and her comments that she's never been more sure of her choice to be a gospel artist.
The music video for Dark Horse, featuring Juicy J, is no less controversial.
Katy, struck by the fact that Juicy J's hometown of Memphis, Tennessee shared a name with a place in Egypt, decided on an Egyptian theme, said Time Entertainment,
As Katy has been criticized for cultural appropriation before, some wondered if this would be another example of that.
Unlike Miley, Katy, or at least those around her, doesn't appear to completely ignore the criticism she's received. From the Time Entertainment report it seems that Katy's music video director, Matthew Cullen, does seem to have taken this under serious consideration, but he feels that ancient Egypt is part of a "shared collective mythology".
Apparently the video contains surprisingly accurate references and symbolism true to the Cleopatra myth, at least according to the Egyptologists Time Entertainment asked.
Most recently, Katy's video has been accused of blasphemy, as a necklace depicting the name of the Muslim god Allah crumbles to dust in the video, along with its wearer. At the time of writing, a Change.org petition to have Youtube remove the video is sitting on over 65 000 signatures.
