Miley Cyrus naked with a hammer - what does it mean?

So, Miley Cyrus has released the video for her latest single, Wrecking Ball.

Internal dialogue while watching this video goes along the lines of “That’s pretty, like Sinéad O'Connor in Nothing Compares. Oh, she forgot her pants. Why is she licking a hammer? You what? Oh you wreaked me. Seriously, why the granny pantiOH WOW OK she’s naked.”

The rest of the video is filled to brimming with the sort of mildly pornographic imagery that either excites you or makes you uncomfortable.

Just in case you hadn’t noticed yet, Miley’s grown up.

So what is Miley trying to say, exactly?

Well, I’m going to go with “Look at me”. Miley’s latest album is on the way, and she seems quite determined that her lifestyle and image change won’t cause her to fade out.

So, like almost any artist before her, she’s grabbing onto controversial topics and riding them (naked) to fame.

Considering my Twitter feed this morning, I’m pretty sure it’s working.

I have mixed feelings about this whole thing. On the one hand, Miley’s making it pretty clear that she is not ashamed of her body or her sexuality at all, and I find that quite awesome.

She likes getting naked. I’m pretty sure she likes sex. In a sea of false modesty, body shaming and slut shaming, it’s nice to see a girl who seems to be comfortable in her own skin, even if she does seem to have a bit of a thing for inanimate objects.

On the other hand, Terry Richardson directed the video.

Terry Richardson, who has, not once, but many times, been accused of, basically, being a pervert.

Ex top model Rie Rasmussen said of him, "He takes girls who are young, manipulates them to take their clothes off and takes pictures of them they will be ashamed of. I told him what you do is completely degrading to women."

Terry has, of course, denied all these allegations, but then he has Hannah Montana, naked, straddling a wrecking ball and licking a hammer.

As much as I hate referencing Hannah Montana, because Miley, like everyone else, does have a right to outgrow and leave her Disney image behind, there just seems something particularly disturbing about that.

Still, either Terry and those advising Miley coerced her into this performance, in which case I’m disgusted at him and those influential people, or she decided on this show herself with no coercion.

In which case...Well, I don’t find it particularly arty myself, but I can appreciate Miley’s right to self-expression as opposed to CarefullyDesignedByDisney-expression.

One thing’s for certain, the Internet is going to be clutching her pearls pretty tightly today.
