After disappointing us last month when the initial launch was cancelled I was excited to find out that we could at last download the long awaited BBM for android app this week.
Before switching to Samsung I had a BB so I am familiar with the whole concept of “BBMing” – yes it’s a verb. Losing BBM was the only sad part about swapping out my BB for Android, really. But I knew it had to be done because I loathed my ‘I’ll-work-when-I-feel-like-it’ BB but really missed BBM.
Many people ask “why would you want BBM if you have Whatsapp and all those other chat platforms?”
For me BBM is just more convenient.
For example, on Whatsapp, when you read one persons message it shows to all your contacs that you’re online. I have come across a few people who go really psycho when I’ve been ‘online’ but haven’t replied to their messages. *sigh* I know, so dramatic.
But with BBM it’s totally different. You might be in a situation where you have to chat to your one friend because she has a hair emergency but there’s this other annoying friend who always texts you about the most random stuff and you avoid her BB’s like the plague. With BBM, you can happily chat to your friend with the hair emergency. The annoying friend wouldn’t know you’re online because her message will still show ‘unread’.
Also, with BBM it is a lot easier to keep up with what your friends are up to through their status updates.
So back to the question: Is BBM on Android a good idea? Well, I think it’s awesome. Because I was on BBM before I could connect my old profile to the android app. I got all my old contacts back. So I didn’t have the schlep of going through the whole process of collecting pins and contacts again. And the layout is different to what it looks like on BB. It’s sleeker, and funkier.
The one issue I have though is with the size of the emoticons – they’re so small you can hardly tell them apart. It’s happened a few times that I want to send a smiley face I accidently send the sad emo face – and you know what trouble that could cause.
It takes some getting used to but all in all I am totally content with the app.
If you haven’t downloaded it yet, don’t worry - you’ll be able to download it within the next few days but don’t expect too much too soon. Due to the high demand, there’s a waiting line, which means you’ll have to wait quite a while. The only reason I could download the app immediately was because I had secured my spot in the line because I registered on the BB website last month. See, I’m a real fan girl!
