Save money and make your candles perfect for that special occasion. Not only will this be a fun activity for you and your family, but you can personalise them into unique gifts.
You will need:
• Wax (You can old candle stubs from restaurants or even your local church).
• Wicks
• Coloured crayons to dye the wax
• Vanilla extract or any other scent that you might prefer,
• A double boiler (or two pots that can fit together for the same effect)
• A knife
• Coke cans with the tops cut off (to use as moulds)
• A disposable mixing spoon
Here’s how:
• Soften your wax by leaving it on a piece of newspaper in the sun.
• Place your wax on a newspaper and leave it out to soften in the sun.
• Turn your double boiler on, or place boiling water in the bottom pot and rest the top pot on it, making sure that the stove is hot.
• Place newspapers all around your work space to avoid making a mess.
• Cut your block of wax into blocks and melt each one in the top pot separately.
• Add a little coloured wax crayon to the melting wax. Use small pieces at a time until it looks right. Then also add your scent.
• Cut off some wick and make it 2-3cm longer than your candle. Dip it into the melted wax and lay it out straight onto a newspaper, and place into the fridge to harden.
• Once melted and the colour has mixed in properly, pour the wax into your moulds and place it in the fridge.
• When the top of the candle looks set, but the rest of the contents beneath are still liquid, poke a hole into the centre with a toothpick and insert the hardened wick until it touches the bottom of the mould.
• Place the moulds back in the fridge until the candles are completely hard and set.
• Gently peel the mould off to reveal your candles.
