10 hilarious lessons for living alone

This is one reader's response to Lili's newsletter about learning to live alone.

1. Cooking for 1 is a thankless mission! You spend an hour (at least) in the kitchen, only to enjoy the meal all on your own. Doing the ‘omnomnom’ is not quite as much fun when you’re the only one doing it. Plus you’re inevitably left with tons of leftovers, which, if you don’t like eating the same thing twice in two days, tends to go to waste.

2. You learn to freeze food. Refer to number 1.

3. Sound carries! If you live in a block of flats or complex, you hear everything. You know when your neighbours are having sex (and just how little you’re having), who’s having an argument and what it’s about, what time your neighbour gets home from work (and you clock her in daily and even get concerned when she doesn’t come home at that time) and which of your neighbours snore. Banging on the walls becomes 2nd nature.

4. You often want to gate-crash parties.
Whenever you hear neighbours having a party, you feel a sudden pinch of FOMO and want to join in. Still haven’t quite plucked up the courage to do that!

5. The fridge. Unlike when living with someone else, the fridge is not suddenly going to perform a magic trick and surprise you with its contents the next time you open it. If you don’t re-stock, expect nothing different. Milk, eggs and a variety of sauces is pretty much the status quo.

6. You can do your toilet business with the door open! You don’t have to turn up the volume on the radio/tv or turn on the shower taps JUST because you’re doing a number 2.

7. Drinking on your own is no longer frowned upon. Enough said.

8. You miss the furry ones.
Living in a complex that doesn’t allow pets really makes you miss their company.

9. Sundays and Carte Blanche. Let it just be said that being out and about or having something constructive to do on a Sunday is preferable.

10. Bed buddies.
You and your bed form a very close bond and spend a lot of time together. No one cares if you eat, drink, fart and spend all day in bed.

What kind of lessons did you learn living on your own? Do you have any stories to tell?
