While admiring the locks of Khloé Kardashian and the newly tortoiseshelled Blake Lively, I have always wondered how I’d describe this style when going to a salon. Now I finally know...
According to Huffington Post, tortoiseshell hair (also referred to as ecaille) style refers to a trending dye technique that blends multiple tones of golden blondes, caramel, chestnuts and chocolates, creating a soft, natural-looking (and almost delicious sounding) hair colour.
According to the The Glow, London-based hair colourist, Jack Howard has been credited for creating this trend. He describes the trend as being ombré’s moodier sister; describing it as richer and more luxurious.

What you should know about tortoiseshell-inspired hair colour:
• When asking your hairdresser for tortoiseshell hair, refer to the ombré style as the two are quite similar.
• Unless you really wish to change it, it grows out well and needs no retouching. It’s a perfect low maintenance style.
• Because of the drying effect dye has on hair: condition, condition, condition!
