Winter fashion essentials for women who hate shopping

Okay, so you’re still stuck in summer. Get over it! It’s not coming back for at least 2 more seasons.

Updating your wardrobe can be a bit like updating your Facebook status: a precarious balance of personality, ego and comfort. Plus the added pressure of heading into the shops. You go there with such good intentions. You are just going to buy a coat. Only a coat. You enter, and suddenly your mind starts going a million miles a minute. The lights, the mirrors (so many mirrors!) and the sales people. And before you know it, you end up leaving the store with yet another bloody beige cardigan.

So I see it going two ways for us all: either you have lots of money and can buy new trendy winter items (online maybe) at a whim *jealous scowl*, or alternatively, you are like the rest of womankind who have to budget (i.e. often be physically restrained by friends) and only get the winter “essentials”.

Essentials as in: pieces that won’t necessarily land your face on a well-known street style blog, but that will at least keep you warm and a la mode.

Here's what to get if you want to be smart about it this winter:

Turtleneck

Always wanted to incorporate your summer frocks into your winter wardrobe? Wear a tight-fitting turtleneck underneath your favourite slip dress or maxi dress.

Beret

Nope, not only reserved for the EFF, the beret is basically the new beanie.  Just try to avoid styling it with too much blue and white as this might make you look like a Parisian tosser.

Coat

Get it in colour or faux fur. Boo for boring black winter coats, get yourself one in pale pink or wildly colourful faux fur; and keep the rest of your outfit underneath plain and simple.

Shawl/Blanket wrap

Better than a bear hug from a bearded fellow who smells of the ocean, the shawl is the new scarf.

Ankle boots and sneakers

Long boots…be gone! Unless they are above the knee, which is a fashion investment all on its own.

Ankle boots and sneakers are your go-to footwear for autumn and winter. So much so, that I am convinced you only really need two pairs of shoes for the next few months. Closet space? Check!
