Taking the leap into the world of freelance work is a daunting experience. Whether you’ve simply decided that’s how you want to work, have been forced into it due to retrenchment or want to start a side hustle, it’s a whole different ball game to being a salaried employee.

When writer Shea Karssing opted to become a full-time freelancer six years ago she wanted more flexibility and to increase her earning potential. She achieved it, but not without making plenty of mistakes along the way.

It inspired her to share what she’s learnt, so she wrote Freelance Like a Boss: How to Escape the 9-5 and Take Control of Your Life, which is filled with advice on every­thing from identifying your marketable skills and negotiating contracts to paying the correct tax and managing your time.
