His job was to help his clients through the legal process of getting divorced, but the emotional suffering he saw them going through had a huge impact on him.
So much so that lawyer William Henry decided to write a book to help people deal with the emotional pain that comes with divorce. Then, a year into writing it, his own marriage fell apart and his clients’ suffering became very real and deeply personal.
It made him even more determined to write a book to help people overcome the paralysing thoughts and destructive patterns of behaviour that continue their suffering. “Despite the title, DivorceZen, this is not a Buddhist guide to divorce,” Henry says. “I just like the word ‘zen’ because in my mind it conjures up images of peace and serenity, like a tree by a stream on a clear summer’s day.”
