Action star Arnold Schwarzenegger is opening up in a new documentary, admitting that his affair with his housekeeper caused his family immeasurable pain.

In the trailer for the upcoming Netflix doccie, called Arnold, the 75-year-old gets candid his split from ex-wife, Maria Shriver (67), with whom he has four children. Their 25-year-old marriage came to an abrupt end in 2011 when it emerged he’d had a son, Joseph Baena (now 25), with his household employee, Mildred Baena.

The Terminator star appears pensive as he reflects on the scandal it caused. “People will remember my successes, but they will also remember those failures. It was very tough on my marriage, on my relationship with my kids," he says.

“I've caused enough pain for my family. I’m going to have to live with it for the rest of my life.”

The doccie also includes never-before-seen footage of the former Mr Universe pumping iron and behind-the-scenes images of his journey into politics as the governor of California.

Arnie went from a virtual nobody in his native Austria to becoming one of the biggest movie stars in the world, known for blockbusters such as the Terminator franchise.

Of his aspirations to conquer Tinseltown, he says, “I saw myself on that stage. Thousands of people screaming, 'Arnold, Arnold, Arnold!' And when you visualise something really clearly, you believe that you can 100% get there."

The actor, who has now turned his hand to producing, served as the 38th governor of California from 2003 until 2011.

“You can get an injury and all the athletic stuff is over. But the only thing that no-one can take from you is your mind. I was looking for another challenge, politics.”

Friends in the doccie, which premieres on Netflix on 7 June, say "he had no staff, no real plan, he blew up the political system”.

Even though critics thought he wouldn't make it, he's always had a never-give-up mentality. “You're always hungry, you're never really satisfied. No matter what it takes, work your ass off, do it, do it now.”
