Camila Cabello is taken aback by Shawn Mendes sound-alike on The Voice

Well, that was awkward!

Camila Cabello, the latest addition to The Voice judging panel, was taken aback to hear what she thought was the voice of her ex, fellow singer Shawn Mendes, at a blind audition on the show.

“Is that my . . . is that Shawn up there? I thought that was Shawn,” said the Havana pop star (25), as contestant Tanner Howe belted out Shawn’s hit Mercy. 

Camila and Shawn (24) dated between 2019 and 2021 but have remained friends and continue to co-parent their fur baby, a golden retriever named Tarzan.

Tanner’s rendition of Mercy was so good, said Camila, she found herself wondering, “Is that Shawn on stage right now?”

Tanner responded: “Wow, you know him best so . . .” 

Sadly for Tanner, he didn’t get Camila’s nod because she felt that he sounded too much like Shawn. She suggested he needs to distinguish himself, musically.

“I really respect Shawn as an artist and I see myself in that lane but I totally love what you are saying, thank you so much, I will try to be more unique,” Tanner said. 

Camila replied, with a giggle, “I was in his lane – deeply!”

Fellow judges John Legend and Blake Shelton appeared taken aback at her remark, with John saying: “She’s trying to make it as awkward as possible.”  

Tanner later took to Twitter, “Love Shawn but do I really sound like him?”

He said after the show that he didn't find his and Camila’s exchange awkward at all. 

“Camila handled it really well and I’m pretty sure she was mostly joking about me sounding like Shawn,” Tanner said.

Camila and Shawn have not been seen together for a few months and despite rumours that they’ve started dating other people, they’re yet to confirm anything.
