He’s at an age when parenting babies is a thing of the past – so spare a thought for music producer David Foster who says he is still adjusting to the challenge of raising a toddler again for the first time in decades.

“At this point in my life it’s different again,” says the 73-year-old, who welcomed son Rennie with his wife, American singer Katharine McPhee Foster (38), in early 2021.

“Not better or worse, just different. I still work, I’m still gone a lot, but maybe the time is a little more precious to me because I got more runway behind me now than I have ahead of me,” he told People.

He admits he was too busy with his career and working day and night to really help raise his five daughters – Allison (52), Amy (49), Sara (41), Erin (40) and Jordan (36) – from previous relationships.

“I was arrogant and just on the move,” he reflects.

Now, with age, he reckons he’s a better dad and one with infinitely more patience. “I was not patient when I was young,” the 16-time Grammy winner admits.

“I think that I can offer one thing to Rennie – even though I won’t be around when he’s 50 or 40 even, or 30 maybe – I think I can offer him wisdom from my 73 years on the planet. And maybe that's not a bad trade-off. I hope so.”

While he has previously admitted that becoming a father at his age was not something he anticipated, he has never “regretted a single day of it”.

“Sadly, for my [older] kids, I was just working a lot. Even though I’m working a lot now, I’ll cancel anything just to hang with him. It’s just different.”

He is hoping his almost-two-year-old will follow in his parents' musical footsteps.

“Well, you know I’m trying to hold back a little, I don't want to get too excited but you would think between Kat and I, we probably would have a child that would be musical,” he told E! News earlier this month, adding Rennie does “seem to lean towards drumming”.

“It’s a little early to tell. I hope he at least finds joy in music.”

After teaming up for their first joint holiday album 17 years ago, Katharine and David, who met on the set of American Idol in 2006, released a Christmas album last year.

The seven-song EP called Christmas Songs features such classics as Jingle Bell Rock and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
