Madonna rang in the new year with a fun-filled family trip to her adopted children's home country of Malawi and they all pitched in to help with some charity work in Kenya.

The pop superstar visited Kenya with her twins Stella and Estere (10), daughter Mercy James (16) and sons David (17) and Rocco (22), whose dad is filmmaker Guy Richie.

Lourdes Leon (26), her daughter with ex-partner Carlos Leon, was not on the trip

In Kibera, Nairobi, the largest urban slum in Africa which is home to 2,5 million people, Madonna and her kids helped make a mural of a dove and a "tree of life” in honour of Kennedy Odede, the Kenyan social entrepreneur who founded Shining Hope for Communities, an organisation which works to improve the lives of people living in challenging conditions.

“We are very impressed with Odede's work and his commitment to this community and we're excited to continue working with him and his wife Jessica!!” Madonna wrote in an Instagram post.

The family also visited a local school, a library and an art gallery. Madonna posed in front of a motorbike with the words "Jesus saves", which she captioned "Facts".

Madonna and her kids earlier visited Malawi, where her children David, Mercy James, Stella and Estere were born.

The Like A Virgin singer posted photos and videos of the family's activities in Malawi where she opened the country's first children's hospital, the Mercy James Centre for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care, in 2017.

The family is seen dancing with locals and playing soccer as Madonna punts her song Back That Up To The Beat in a video post.

They also visited her non-profit organisation, Raising Malawi, where Madonna filmed an impromptu music video for the new version of her 2015 song.
