Thirty-one years. That’s how long it’s been since he was diagnosed with the debilitating disease – three decades in which he sank into alcoholism and beat it, raised his family and worked as often and as hard as he could. 

Parkinson’s would not define him, Michael J Fox vowed, nor would he allow anyone to treat him like a patient. And it’s this attitude that has helped him become one of the most inspirational figures Hollywood has seen. 

The years haven’t been easy, but his determination and feistiness remain undimmed – and this much was obvious when he made an appearance at the recent Comic Con event in New York to reminisce about Back to the Future, the 1985 cult classic in which he played time- travelling high-schooler Marty McFly.
