It was one of the most-watched scenes in sitcom history – the one where Chandler finally marries Monica. Fans went wild, ratings soared and the cast and crew celebrated afterwards, but one person was conspicuously absent.

As soon as the scene wrapped, Matthew Perry, who played the hilariously acerbic Chandler, was driven to rehab – one of the umpteenth times he checked into a facility in his gruelling battle with addiction.

And that decades-long battle is now laid bare in harrowing detail in his new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.
