Simone Biles has opened up about her husband’s contentious comments about their relationship, saying she supports him despite the many calls for her to divorce him.

The controversy began six months ago when her spouse, NFL player Jonathan Owens, appeared on a podcast called The Pivot and referred to himself as "the catch" in their relationship, sparking significant backlash from fans.

The 28-year-old player also admitted that despite Simone being the most famous gymnast in the world, he didn't have any clue who she was when they first met.

Now Simone has broken her silence on the matter, speaking out in her husband's defence.

“He said he was a catch . . . because he is," Simone (27) said in an interview with Alex Cooper for her Call Her Daddy podcast.

When Jonathan's podcast episode aired in December last year she said she thought everything was okay "then I go on Twitter and everybody’s like: ‘Divorce this man’. He’s mean!'

“I’m like he’s the sweetest, he praises the ground that I walk on,” she continued. “I’ve never met a man like him . . . he truly goes out of his way to do anything for me.”

Though she found the backlash hilarious and paid no mind to it at first, over time it became too much to bear.

“One night I broke down and I’m like: Why are you guys talking about my husband like this? You don’t know him. You don’t know who he is and if anybody’s met him, you know he’s the sweetest guy, will do anything for anybody.

“That really hurt, that they were talking about my husband like that. For me, it’s like, talk about me all you want, but don’t come for my family, never,” she said.

The couple first crossed paths in December 2019 when Simone was invited to lead Jonathan’s then-NFL team, the Houston Texans, out of the tunnel at the start of a match.

But it was only in March 2020, when the pair matched on the celebrity dating app Raya, that they hit it off and started dating.

Three years later they tied the knot.

Despite the public scrutiny over Jonathan's comments, the couple remain each other's biggest fans. Simone has regularly been spotted cheering on the sidelines at his football games, and the Chicago Bears' player often praises his wife's achievements on social media.

While he's currently on an NFL summer training camp, Simone is hard at work training for the Paris Summer Olympics. The pair, however, plan to spend time together at the biggest sporting event in the world in July.

“I’m excited for him to see the Olympics because football’s not in the Olympics,” she says.
