Star light, star bright.
First star I see tonight.
I wish I may, I wish I might.
Have this wish I wish tonight.
I wish I knew who wrote this nursery rhyme. I always think of it when I properly see the stars (sadly, not often enough because of the bright city lights).
If I think of all the things I wished for as a kid and how outrageously out of reach they were, I want to laugh.
But that’s what dreams are sometimes like, aren’t they? Impossible and wonderful to think of.
Some of the wishes I made have come true even though back then they seemed unattainable.
And I’m reminded again, as we look to the year ahead, why it’s so important to dream. How else would we achieve wondrous things?
It may not seem like there’s much good to dream about right now thanks to everything that’s happening in the world. The reality of Covid-19 – and everything it has brought with it – is being felt now more than ever thanks to the second wave hitting us so hard.
It’s difficult to make wishes when it feels as if everything is crumbling around you. When you keep hearing about death, illness, job losses, destruction and general devastation.
Nobody can escape just how much this pandemic has affected our ability to have hope, especially right now. The new year didn’t exactly bring a release from the relentless heartache that spilled over from 2020.
But perhaps that’s even more reason to find that place in your head and heart that makes you think beautiful things and unleash it in all its glory. What better time is there to dream of incredible things you want to achieve or have or do?
What have you got to lose?
This is not going to be an easy year to navigate, not by any measure. But you’re still here and you’re still going strong, even if it’s just putting one foot in front of the other.
So for 2021, I hope your wishes are big and bold and that they feel completely over the top and crazy.
And I hope you’ll chase some of your dreams with all your heart – and that many of them come true this year.
