The country has been rocked by looting and violence, initially triggered by protests over former president Jacob Zuma’s imprisonment for contempt of court.
Zuma was sentenced to 15months in jail for failing to obey a court order to appear before the Zondo commission of inquiry into state capture.
Over the years there have been many protests in South Africa, most stemming from poverty and inequality, and communities have expressed their frustration about delays in the delivery of basic services such as water, electricity and sanitation.
