The development of writing can be regarded as one of the first success stories where different countries, nations, languages and cultures over centuries contributed to how we read and write. Our story begins in ancient times in what’s known today as the Middle East and Egypt.
A SYSTEM OF WRITING IN MESOPOTAMIA
Many inventions originated in Mesopotamia and were later further developed and adapted by other civilisations. And many of these inventions still have an important role in our society today. The Sumerians, who lived in southern Mesopotamia (now southern Iraq), had invented a type of cuneiform writing by about 3000 BC. Cuneiform is a system of pictograms (picture writing) they devised to keep a record of their trade and business transactions.
