A reader’s parrot recently bit off half their budgie’s beak and the vet’s bill was over R2 000. Some people would probably reckon they could just buy a new budgie but the little bird is a beloved part of the family.

Another reader had to fork out over R10 000 after her dog broke a leg. These expenses would have been covered if they had pet insurance.

Though this type of insurance is common these days, the options vary greatly. For example, accident plans are available from about R80 a month, while basic cover costs about R190 a month.
