Matthew Phelps (28), a graduate of Clear Creek Baptist Bible College in Kentucky in the US, called the 911 emergency line after dreaming he’d murdered his wife.
On Friday morning Phelps from Raleigh in North Carolina told a 911 operator he awoke from a horrific dream and then came across his wife’s bloodied corpse.
He says in his call that before bed he drank more cough mixture than he should have. The medication, which is supposed to relieve the symptoms of pain and fever, apparently helped him to sleep better and made him “feel good”.
When Phelps eventually woke from his dream there was blood on him, and a knife in the bed he shared with his wife, Lauren Ashley-Nicole Phelps (29).
“I had a dream, and then I turned on the lights and she’s dead on the floor,” he told the operator.
But it wasn’t a dream; his beautiful wife had been stabbed to death with the knife which was found in their bed.
“I think I killed my . . .” he told the operator. “She’s not moving. Oh God, she doesn’t deserve this,” Phelps said at the end of the phone call which lasted seven minutes.
The couple married in November after getting engaged last May.
This was the last Facebook post of Lauren, a Sunday school teacher who worked as a consultant for a candle company called Scentsy.
Phelps will appear in court on Tuesday. He’s being charged with the murder of his wife and won’t be granted bail.
The police are apparently sceptical about his claim he murdered his wife while having a dream.
The manufacturer of the cough mixture has since confirmed that thus far there’s been no evidence to prove that use of the medication is linked to violent behaviour.
