A young boy blasted a girl with approximately 100 steel pellets using a shotgun he thought was a toy.
When eight-year-old Zhang Shuting from Fuyang, China, walked into a local grocery store he noticed a shotgun left in one of the aisles.
He then picked up the gun, which he apparently thought was a toy, and aimed it at birds close to a girl, whose name is not known. Shuting accidentally shot her instead.
Medics performed numerous surgeries to remove the pellets from the little girl’s body.
Although doctors removed most of the steel pellets, they warned the girl’s parents that she might never walk again as 12 of the steel balls are still lodged in her neck and can’t be safely removed yet.
The shrapnel caused extensive damage to her nervous system, which has left her suffering from constant pain, including headaches and dizziness.
Local police arrested the villagers who owned the shotgun, and it was later revealed that the weapon was illegal.
Both men have since been jailed.
The pair and Shuting’s dad have also been ordered to pay R22 000 in compensation to the girl’s parents.
