It's one of the world’s most dangerous places, filled with snakes, spiders, jaguars and all manner of other life-threatening animal species. But even more dangerous are threats of the human kind: poachers, bandits and drug smugglers.

Yet Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira loved the region so much that they were willing to risk their lives to put a spotlight on the issues facing the world’s largest tropical forest.

In the end, the two men paid the ultimate price for their devotion: a local fisherman confessed to killing them both, burying their bodies in a remote location and putting sacks of soil in their boat so it could sink to the bed of the Itaquai river to avoid detection.
