He shuffled quietly towards the front gate of his house, smiling and nodding at the gawkers, supporters and reporters. It was a sight few people ever expected to see – and one which has enraged the dozens of women who say he ruined their life.

The unexpected release of Bill Cosby – the once beloved sitcom superstar dubbed America’s Dad – dealt a body blow to the Me Too and Time’s Up movements, with women saying his freedom is exactly why rape survivors are reluctant to come forward.

Cosby, now 83 and legally blind, served nearly three years of a 10-year sentence for drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand in 2004. He was the first celebrity convicted in the Me Too and Time’s Up era and his conviction was widely seen as a symbol for powerful men finally being held to account for their crimes.
