Age is just a number for this great-grandfather who joined the gym in his sixties and hasn’t looked back.

Mario Sanna (94) is the oldest member of the I-Motion gym in Rotherham, England, and shows up twice a week for his two-hour workout sessions.

Exercise bikes, rowing machines, leg presses, biceps curls and Pilates classes are all part of his regular workout routine.

“I use everything the gym supplies – any type of machinery, from spinning classes to lifting weights and going on the walking machine,” Mario says.

“I also do Pilates and anything that helps me to be physically more fit than I am now. I’ll lift a 25kg bar, and I go on the cables.”

The former railway engineer dedicated himself to staying fit 30 years ago when he began working out after retiring.

An eye condition prevents him from driving to gym, but a friend picks him up every Tuesday and Friday morning to take him to his workouts, he says.

And exercise isn't the only reason he enjoys going, Mario says. He's also there for the people.

“For me, as for everyone, it's also the perfect opportunity to meet other people, socialise and make friends”, he says.

The gym considers him part of the family and recently celebrated his birthday with him.

“Today we celebrated one of our longest-serving member's birthday with him! Mario turned 94 on Sunday, celebrating with his family at their home in Wales. Today he got to celebrate with his second family here at I-Motion”, the gym posted on its social media feeds.

Mario encourages others to take care of their bodies, just like him.

“In my opinion, the body needs to be moving. I probably keep moving even when I’m asleep. It’s a machine itself. If you leave it idle it begins to deteriorate.”
