She's a "candy-coated dalmatian" who sleeps in a dog cage, enjoys doggie treats and goes to the bathroom outdoors.

Sounds like a dog, right?

Well, not quite! Meow Dalyn, a Twitch streamer from the US, is a pink-haired young woman who says she "identifies as a dog".

Growing up, she always wanted to be a dog and now that she's an adult she can make that dream come true.

“I figured that once I make my own money and pay my own rent, then I can extra do anything I want – and I wanted to be a dog!” she says.

Meow – it's an ironic nickname, she explains, "like how you might name a Chihuahua 'Hercules'" – insists she is not a furry, but an inumimi.

A furry is someone with an interest in anthropomorphised animals, while inumimi are fictional characters from Japanese manga who appear human, apart from dog ears and tails.

"My name is Meow like a cat, but I am a dog," she said in an interview on Australia's Kyle & Jackie O Show.

Meow, who has 15 000 followers on live-streaming service Twitch and describes herself as a "pawfessional e-puppy dog", regularly regales her fans with her hound-like habits – including playing games of fetch and gnawing on bones.

And she sleeps in a dog cage lined with pastel-coloured blankets and pillows.

“There's something about being in a confined space, I don’t know if it makes me feel safe from the world or makes me feel like the world is safe from me, but it feels comfortable for sure!"

“The wonder that comes with play and just being enchanted with life around you is a beautiful thing,” she says.

Meow says she doesn't have a boyfriend, but she does have "handlers", who are like "dog trainers".

“They feed me. They take me on walks. We practise training, which is one of my favorite things, because I get treats."

If her doggie treats or meals get too bland, she adds bone broth and other human ingredients.

People love spending time with her, she says, and she's hopeful more people will embrace their "inner animal".

“I believe there is a primal animal inside of everybody. It’s part of our humanity.”
