It felt like a case of history repeating itself: exactly 20 years after supermodel Heidi Klum graced the cover of Glamour Germany, her daughter, Leni, has wowed the world by making her own appearance on the cover of the glossy mag.

The teen wore a striking floral dress for the shoot but whereas her mom was seen flashing her trademark mega-watt grin at the camera for her Glamour gig, 16-year-old Leni adopted a more sombre and thoughtful pose.

"Thank you to everyone who made my first solo cover so special,” she wrote on Instagram when the magazine recently hit the shelves. “It's an honour to share this with my mama @heidiklum who was Glamour Germany's first ever cover model.”

Meanwhile Heidi (47) wrote on her Instagram account that she "could not be more proud" of her eldest daughter.

Leni's father is Italian businessman Flavio Briatore. However, she was raised by Heidi's former husband, Seal, and goes by the surname Klum ever though the musician formally adopted her. Heidi and Seal have three other kids, Henry (15), Johan (14) and Lou (11).

Leni made her first cover appearance earlier this year with her mom for the January/February 2021 issue of Vogue Germany.

For the shoot the pair are seen wearing oversized bright-coloured pants suits. Heidi leans in to kiss Leni on the cheek, while her daughter looks straight at the camera.

Heidi, who values her family’s privacy, has always made it a point to not allow the media to take pictures of any of her children and she rarely shares any photos of them on social media.

When speaking to Vogue about her daughter's modelling career, Heidi said: “Sixteen is a good age. If you are allowed to drive a car, you can also have an official Instagram account and show your face. And to be allowed to start with a Vogue cover is an insane privilege.”

In the same interview, Leni commented on her modelling career.

“It was only a matter of time before I would try to become a model myself. The first offer came when I was only 12 or 13, from a brand I liked to wear: Brandy Melville. At that time I begged my mother, but no chance. Now I understand that it would have been too early.”

In an interview with People magazine, Heidi revealed that it’s her daughter’s ambition to follow in her footsteps by becoming a supermodel.

“She kind of comes (on set) and looks and learns not just what I do but also what all the different people are doing on a TV set. I think it's very interesting to her.”

While Heidi fully supports her daughter's modelling career she wants Leni to be aware of the dangers.

"The industry is great and I love it and I've been in it for over 20 years but it's also, it's a lot of traveling, it's different,” she says. “You have to be a strong person, especially as a woman you have to be very strong."
