Picking baby names can be fun or fraught, but when your husband wants to name your unborn child after his late wife, well, that might be a step too far.

A mom-to-be took to Reddit to ask if she had overreacted when she got mad at her husband when he said they should name their unborn daughter after his late wife.

Her 36-year-old husband told her this moments after they found out about the pregnancy, and since then has been referring to the unborn child by his late wife’s name and even told his former in-laws about his name plan.

The 32-year-old woman said they met a year after her husband’s first wife had died of cancer.

She says she “feels awful” over the baby-name fight, but she is adamant she does not want to name her child after her husband’s late spouse.

“The situation is horrible, I’m literally losing sleep over this,” she wrote.

“I met him about a year after his wife’s death, we dated casually for a few months till he told me about his feelings and wanting to be in a serious relationship with me.

“We’ve been married for six months now, I’m 18 weeks pregnant with a baby girl.

“My husband decided to name our daughter after his late wife right after we got back from an ultrasound appointment.

“I wanted us to start looking for trendy names, but he declined and insisted on going with his late wife’s name.

“I was so mad I couldn’t even call [my] mum to give her the happy news, I tried approaching him again, but he told me that I was just hating the name because of what it meant to him.

“I yelled at him for not even considering that I too get a say in naming our baby.

“But he doubled down saying there wouldn’t have been possible without him so he has a right to name our baby after his late wife and wouldn’t accept any other name.

“I’m stressing out and I feel awful, not to mention he actually thinks that my feelings don’t matter one bit and his late wife’s family are clearly more important [sic].”

Many Reddit users were blown away by the husband’s actions.

“It’s like the husband doesn’t see her as her own person and his partner, but as a surrogate/proxy for his dead wife,” one said.

Readers said they were stunned by his “selfish” proposal and suggested that he needed help to grieve his late wife, while others suggested she leave him.
