Most of us can only manage noisy sniffles through our nostrils, but Canadian mom-of-two LuLu Lotus can whistle through her nose, and it sounds exactly like a mouth whistle.

LuLu, whose whistles can reach a pitch of 44.1 decibels – about the same volume as a bird call – has earned herself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the loudest noise whistle in the world.

The children's author first discovered her skill when she was seven years old.

“I discovered my ability to create whimsical melodies with my nose,” she said.

"I couldn’t resist the temptation to play pranks on teachers and classmates at school.”

She enjoyed watching the kids and teachers try to find the source of the whistling, even looking outside the classroom.

LuLu nose whistles by using her throat muscles to control the airflows from her nose.

If she opens her mouth, the sound comes out of there instead.

A documentary on EDM DJ and producer Steve Aoki, who is the most-travelled musician in the world, inspired LuLu to attempt to set a world record, she said.

“That sparked my curiosity, and I began to wonder if there was a record for nose whistling."

In June last year she went to Aercoustics Engineering Ltd in Canada to attempt the record. The firm specialises in acoustic design, noise control and vibration control.

“Inside a room designed for precision sound recording, I marvelled at the advanced technology and the staff's expertise."

LuLu said she wouldn't have been able to achieve the record title without the help of acoustic engineer and CEO Payam Ashtiani who measured the volume of her whistle.

LuLu said she was also thrilled to later discover that her five-year-old son has the same talent, and she hopes he'll someday attempt to break her record.

“This Guinness World Records attempt is not only a celebration of my unique talent but also a tribute to the incredible support of friends, the kindness of strangers and my lifelong dream of making my mark in the Guinness World Records book,” LuLu told Guinness World Records.
