She was cruelly mocked by her classmate for being fat. But instead of retaliating, this eight-year-old girl decided to take the high road.
Ivie Watts wrote her bully a gracious letter, saying that she loves herself just as she is and what’s important to her is that her family loved her.
Ivie’s letter was shared by her mother, Mel Watts, who blogs under the moniker The Modern Mumma, on Facebook.
“There are many moments I have worried that my parenting style isn’t working,” Mel, a mom-of-four, captioned the post.
“Some of my kids are harder to parent than the next, some are more sensitive and some are much stronger in certain aspects.”
Mel, who’s from Australia, joked that Ivie’s response to a nasty comment is proof she has mastered parenting.
Mel emphasised her post wasn’t aimed at shaming the bully as the situation had been dealt with appropriately. The proud mom simply wanted to celebrate her daughter’s maturity.
“This letter Ivie wrote to a friend who used an unkind name to describe Ivie. It wasn’t meant in a nasty way; I think it was more of a conversation, but the one word stuck with her.
“It made her feel uncomfortable, stand on scales at home and question her body shape.”
But she overcame her insecurities and, in her letter to the classmate, Ivie boldly says this is her body and “I love who I am and I will never change it”.
“And I don’t care what other people or you think of myself, but I know that my mummy and daddy and family love me,” she continues.
Mel’s post was flooded with positive comments from people
praising Ivie for handling the situation maturely.
“This is amazing,” one user commented. “I love that she is advocating for herself and declaring her self-love, and that she’s confident in her family’s love for her. You should be so, so proud.”
Others praised Mel for raising a girl so confident in her self-worth.
“Parenting done right,” Angela Smeath weighed in. “You should be so proud.”
