No canned laughter required here, GOALS is hilarious.

Watching an episode of the show is like falling down a rabbit hole filled with deep belly laughs and hysterical giggling.

The satirical new sketch-comedy web series, created by and starring David Viviers and Jazzara Jaslyn, follow the lives of Cape Town millennials trying to reach their goals – like most of us.

Relatable, real and roaring with roasts aimed at everyone and no one, it’s a surefire way to stay entertained during lockdown.

The series showcases quite a collection of characters that typify unique tropes of people found in and around Cape Town, so you’re bound to recognise parts of yourself in there or at least someone you know.

David said the aim of the series first and foremost was to make people – including him and Jazzara – laugh.

“The seed came from our own existential, millennial conversations: our lack of understanding new trends, discussing what our twenties are supposed to mean, the ironies we observed in ourselves and others navigating their way through life in Cape Town,” he explained.

“The concept behind the web series came from the social media hashtag #GOALS: “you are goals”, “couple goals”, “squad goals”, etc.

“We found that there was a lot of humour in that: this visual ideal we strive for which is somehow ordained by social media.

“We are laughing at ourselves and at the ironies of our human nature.”

David and Jazzara met while studying theatre and performance at UCT, and it’s been creative heaven ever since.

“I think the friendship really took off when I told Jazzara one morning that I googled her, not realising how creepy that sounded at the time,” David says laughing.

“She said, ‘That’s weird. Do you want to come eat cheesecake at my flat?’ and we spent the afternoon laughing while she played bad guitar songs for me.”

The pair have always enjoyed a deeply shared a sense of humour so it was natural for the sketch-comedy series to evolve.

And, it’s been getting rave reviews online.

“The biggest reaction has been laughter: people seem to enjoy the characters and we think the skits work best when what they explore is recognised by those watching it,” David said.

“A big surprise has been the number of people who thought our skit ‘Namaste Home’ was real.

“We have about 45K views on our Facebook video, and the comment section is a hilarious roller coaster.”

During these tough times, the series offers much-needed comic relief and is exactly what’s called for.

David and Jazzara are staying together during lockdown, and have used the opportunity to create their enjoyable series in the face of the constant sense of instability caused by the limited availability of freelance work at this time.

“Being a freelance artist often carries a sense of instability: you never quite know where your next pay cheque is coming from or when. So in that sense, it’s not necessarily an unusual feeling,” David explained.

“But the reality of no income is starting to hit now, and is worrying.

“But we also know that it’s a lot more concerning for a big part of the population and that we’re lucky to be where we are.”

The comedic co-stars hope that one day their project will evolve into something financially profitable.

However support for the arts is quite limited during lockdown even though it’s a key part of keeping individuals in quarantine entertained.

“It would be great if our love for creating new characters and content could align with an income through GOALS, and we do hope something financially viable can come from this in some shape or form – especially given the nature of freelance work during this time,” David said.

“We love collaborating with new people and making new content, particularly creating comedic characters that suit brands, corporate or commercial.”
