As SA mourns Archbishop Desmond Tutu we take a look at his transformation from frail child to moral giant and South African hero

It's hard to believe we’ll never again hear his high-pitched peal of laughter. Or see the glorious smile that lit up any room he was in. 

Whenever we found ourselves in uncertain times Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Mpilo Tutu was there to offer comfort. And when democracy finally arrived it was the Arch, as he was affectionately known, who coined the perfect name for the new South Africa – the Rainbow Nation. 

In the wake of Nelson Mandela’s death in 2013, Tutu remained a consistent beacon of hope.
