He was one of the stars of the Springbok team and the match would come alive whenever he ran onto the field. Few would’ve guessed that when AJ Venter pulled off his rugby boots, the daring he displayed in battle was replaced with crippling anxiety and insecurity.

“Life isn’t always fair,” AJ (47) says from his apartment on an estate in Ballito on the KZN North Coast.

During the 12 years he spent playing professional rugby in the early 2000s, the formidable Bok flank ran out for almost all the SA provincial teams except the Blue Bulls and had a stint in Italy too. He had a reputation for being as hard as nails and giving his all.
