“It's every parent's worst nightmare,” said Marné Faure to her husband, Swys, as they watched a TV interview with former Springbok Jannie du Plessis talking about his son's drowning in 2021.

Her words were still hanging in the air when they heard splashing in their swimming pool. They ran outside from their braai room and saw their eldest daughter, Leja (8), holding the lifeless body of her sister, Klara (3), in her arms.

Klara wasn't breathing and her mouth was blue.
