As a child, she had a hand-me-down suitcase full of plastic bricks and would spend hours playing with them. To Michelle Kruger, Lego was a status symbol. Kids who had lots of Lego were well-off. Those who didn’t – or had to wait for their brothers and sisters to outgrow the craze – really appreciated the stuff.

“But I’ve upset the apple cart now,” Michelle (34) says, laughing. “I’m spending thousands on Lego.

”Yet it’s much more than a toy now: it’s her bread and butter. Michelle is a Lego artist, creating portraits of famous faces such as Vincent van Gogh and Marilyn Monroe out of hundreds of thousands of little bricks.
