The family of a missing 16-year-old has finally found closure.
The body of Adriana Michelle Orozco, who was reported missing in November 2017, was discovered in a morgue in Lagos de Morena in Mexico after her family spent two years looking for her.
According to local media, the teen’s body was found alongside the corpse of two men, one of them being her neighbour. All three bodies suffered gunshot wounds.
The body was allegedly found on 4 November two years ago in a field in the city a day after her family had reported her disappearance to local authorities.
But the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) didn’t link the corpse to the missing person’s report and her family spent the next two years looking for her.
“On Saturday 3 November 2017, the day of her disappearance, she told her mother she was going to run some errands but she didn’t return,” Adriana’s father, Pedro Alvarez, says.
“We found it weird and the next day we reported her as missing.”
Yolanda, the mother of one of Adriana’s friends, went to SEMEFO because she was looking for her brother and her nephew who were – and still are – missing. She then happened to find the girl when she saw a picture of her in their archives.
“I recognised her the moment I saw her,” Yolanda says.
The family is trying to determine why it took so long for police to identify her body.
“The prosecutor’s office filed the case, they researched her social media profiles, but they never told us anything,” the distraught father says.
“We’ve spent two years looking for her. I’m going to go to the human rights office today to see what happened at the SEMEFO and the prosecutor’s office.”
The circumstances surrounding the teenage girl’s death remains unclear and an investigation is ongoing.
The family says Adriana liked “being at home and she wanted to study criminology.”
