Two teenage girls took this selfie just before they’re believed to have jumped in a well at a popular local “suicide spot”.

The bodies of the 17-year-olds, whose names haven’t yet been released, were found in the well in Mumbai, India.

Police say the girls took a picture close to the well and turned it into their WhatsApp profile pictures just before they died.

Their smartphones, shoes and anklets were found nearby leading police to believe they’d deliberately jumped into the water.Their shocked families say neither of the girls had shown any signs of being depressed or suicidal.

One of the grieving parents revealed his daughter had recently begged him to buy her some dresses she’d seen on television.

"I promised to get them for her. The clothes will arrive in a few days, but my daughter is not around to wear them," he said.

Police are studying the girls' phones in the hope of establishing a motive, however the girls deleted their WhatsApp chats before their deaths.

Police say one of the girls had recently broken up with her boyfriend, telling him that she was seeing another boy. They think it could be linked to their suicide.

It’s believed to be the fourth suicide incident at the well in Mumbai's Goregaon suburb in the past two years.

The girls were friends, lived near each other and their parents were rice farmers.

One was still in school while the other had left and started sewing to earn money.

Police say on the afternoon of their alleged suicide, the teenagers left home without saying anything to their families.

The father of one of the girls said a local boy saw them walking in the direction of the well but they asked him not to tell anyone he’d seen them.

The man said the girls had called another boy they knew, telling him what they planned to do.

The boy called the brother of one of the girls who rushed to the scene but he arrived too late.

Firefighters recovered the bodies from the well. Police officers are investigating the incident.
