A Canadian man plunged to his death in Thailand after a cable from his zipline snapped.
The 25-year-old man, who was on holiday with his girlfriend and friends, reportedly fell 100m from Flight of the Gibbon, a popular zipline nature trail that takes riders across jungles and waterfalls in Chiang Mai in Thailand, on Saturday 13 April, BBC News reports.
An investigation conducted by local police revealed that safety locks on his body harness and the main line broke, causing him to fall into a rocky creek where his body was later found.
“All evidence will be sent to the forensic office,” police major Sakarin Wiratsaken told Metro News.
Police officials are also investigating whether the weight limit was exceeded and any other potential negligence on the part of the zipline personnel.
A spokesperson for Canada's department for global affairs told BBC News they’re assisting the man’s family.
"Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the Canadian citizen who died in Thailand. Consular services are provided to the family and loved ones of the Canadian.”
The zipline company has accepted full responsibility for the accident and offered to compensate the victim’s family, Asia One reports.
This isn’t the first time the Flight of the Gibbon attraction has run into trouble.
In 2016, the park was closed for safety reasons after three Israeli tourists, including a seven-year-old boy, were left seriously injured during a mid-air collision.
