This couple wanted to know more about the person who was responsible for looking after their children while they were away.

A man revealed that after he found an ID in their babysitter’s handbag that didn’t match the one she’d shared with him and his wife, they decided to do their own investigation – which has now had repercussions, Mirror reported.

Taking to Reddit anonymously, the father-of-two shared in a post that their decision to hire a private investigator came after he discovered the ID as he was putting the nanny’s pay in her bag.

“She’s watching the kids between 10-20 hours a week,” he wrote.

“Recently I came back and it was time to pay her, but she was in the middle of bathing the kids so said, ‘Can you just put it in my purse?’ I said, ‘No problem.’ I went downstairs and found her purse but it was a little cluttered so I put it in her wallet in her purse so it would be easy to find and count.”

This was when he came across the woman’s ID in the transparent front pocket of her wallet, “and it had her photo but her name was completely different from the one she had given us and we’d background checked when we had hired her”, the man added.

He and his wife then decided to hire a PI because they worried that the employee was hiding something and as she was looking after their three-year-old and one-year-old, they had to ensure their children’s safety.

The couple were informed that the nanny had two IDs to “circumvent a bureaucratic rule about student living arrangements”.

When the couple realised the ID they found wasn’t of much consequence, they didn’t disclose the investigation to the nanny – but then their tot spilt the beans.

“Then, unfortunately, unbeknown to us our three-year-old overheard us talking about it and said something that tipped her off to the whole thing,” the man revealed.

“We explained that we’d become aware, looked into it, but it was all fine now.”

Despite their explanation, the nanny felt violated.

“She was very upset, said it was none of our business why she’d have two IDs, and it was a violation of her privacy to look into her life instead of just asking her,” he wrote.

“Now she’s even considering quitting.”

While some netizens accused the couple of snooping around and meddling in their babysitter’s business, others supported their decision.

“She watches your kids, you have the right to know what her deal is,” one user commented.

“If they were THAT concerned over the fake ID, why hire a professional stalker instead of just firing her? So weird,” another added.
