A woman who says her sister wants to name her new-born baby after one of her favourite foods has stirred up debate among parents online with some saying the baby may be “bullied”.

The woman, who posted anonymously in the forum AITA (Am I the A**hole) on Reddit, says her sister, who’s near to giving birth, purposely waited this long before revealing what she wanted to name her baby.

When the mom-to-be first told her about the name, the woman says she assumed it was a joke, the Mirror reports.

But it turns out she was being entirely serious.

“The name is Portabella (and yes, she did give me permission to share it here). Like the mushroom,” the woman wrote on Reddit.

“At first I thought she was joking, but then she started saying how we could just call the kid Bella for short. There’s obviously nothing wrong with Bella, but I think naming your kid after a mushroom is weird.

“I told my sister that she can name her baby whatever she wants as long as BIL [brother-in-law, the baby’s father] is on board, but she did not take this well.”

And a battle ensued.

“She got really irritated, pointing out how I have my weird obsession with fried chicken (it’s kinda true) so why can’t she have a weird obsession with her favourite mushroom?” she wrote.

“I told her she can be obsessed with whatever food she likes, but you don’t see me making plans to name my firstborn the Colonel.

“This just made her explode. I keep telling her the name is fine and I don’t care what the baby’s called as long as she’s healthy, but she’s insisting I was being an a**hole. Was I, though? I don’t care what the baby’s name is, I’m just excited to be an auntie.”

Reddit users did not hold back, with some likening the name to “Port-a-potty” while others claimed the child would be bullied.

“OP’s [original poster] sister can’t even handle someone having a reaction to her child’s name AS AN ADULT but she wants to put that on a child? How’s the kid supposed to handle the inevitable bullying if her own mom can’t without blowing up,” one wrote.

“Will definitely get bullied. I love lasagne so I now know what my next move is,” another wrote.

Here’s hoping reason will prevail.
